Praising God Today...

Dear Friends,

Today is awesome. Today is the day that my friend Solomon is united with his family. Solomon's story is similar to Biruk's story - an orphan, minding his own business at Kolfe when one day this women comes into his life and God writes this boy's name across her heart. She'll never be the same, and he'll never be the same. They email back and forth for several years, he accepts Christ, she teaches him about family, God, and love. Her and her husband send him to school in Ethiopia. She flies back for his graduation and tears roll down her cheeks as she watches him graduate as the top student in his class. Then God provides him with a scholarship for bible college in the US and after a year and thousands of prayers from across the world, this e-mail comes to me on Monday:

solomon bekele to me Jun 21 (2 days ago)

Birthday Fun

Saturday we celebrated Avery's 11th birthday

with some sweet laser tag and go-cart racing

Avery won.

Amelle was shocked to find that her cart moved when she hit the gas.

Dirt had more fun than any of the kids.

Ethiopian Idol?

I know that a lot of people love the show American Idol. It's a real big deal to some people. I hear them talking about it in the elevator and at the salon. I see the tweets and FB updates. People are into it and they love those singers.

I don't.

I love widows and orphans.

So to me, when I go to Ethiopia in October, it's like getting a backstage pass to meet the American Idol winner. It's a HUGE honor for me.

I am so excited that I GET to meet her.

And them.

And her - and she'll let me hold that baby and kiss it's little round cheeks. She totally will.

..and if I'm lucky, I'll get to help her carry her water. I so want the honor and priviledge of carrying her water for her. (though I probably won't be smiling so graciously). She does this journey every day - lugging as much dirty contaminated water as she can carry.
See that smile? In the midst of climbing uphill with three water jugs - that smile tells me that joy isn't found in circumstances. That smile has taught me so much - I can't wait to meet her!
I want her to laugh as she remembers the time those crazy ferenges (white people) from Maine came and carried her water for her. I feel like it's the least that I can do for all she has already done for me.

Hap-pee Birthday to Me?

I'm pretty sure I just received the BEST birthday gift ever.

Um, seriously.
Oh, you don't know what a Go Girl is? You must find out.

I love this gift more than words can say
I love that it arrived 5 days before my birthday
I love that it made me laugh for 10 minutes straight
I love that it comes with a tattoo that I can (and will) wear
I love the logo: "Don't take life sitting down"
I love that I will be bringing this to Africa with me

...but what I love most of all...

is this

Thanks Nancy, I love you, girl!

Memorial Day Weekend - Monday

My mom's birthday was on Monday...which provided all the reason we needed to gather for a cook-out.

This has nothing to do with anything.

After the cook-out at Grandmas, we walked down to York Harbor Beach

Where the water was tinted yellow from the Pollen. The OCEAN - tinted yellow from the stinkin' pollen? Are you kidding me? Actually, it made me feel better about my yellow tinted dining room table. If the pollen could overtake the Atlantic Ocean, my housekeeping never stood a chance.

He was the only sensible one who walked away neither wet, nor sandy.

...and no pictures of the birthday girl.
I've been a total camera slacker lately!

Memorial Day Weekend - Sunday

Is late still better than never?

Here is how the rest of our Memorial Day weekend looked:

1st family fishing outing of the season - bait fishing over "the bridge"

Okay, we didn't ALL fish. This is basically what I did.

But they fished. Amelle hooked the first catch of the day! Sweet. A little bait fish - not sure what it was and we tossed it back.

I think Dirt might have been in heaven.

Biggest catch of the day!

No, we didn't eat it!

Memorial Day Weekend - Saturday

We had no internet or home phone service all weekend, which was actually kind of nice. Except that it put me behind on blogging the events of our long weekend...which was actually relatively uneventful...but that just gives me an opportunity to make stuff up in order to make us sound more exciting than we are.

We played with a ladybug

Washed the 1 inch layer of pollen off my car.
(like I always say, it's important to have a shiny clean license plate)

Tried out some Rondo moves on the mini basketball net. (He plays with this thing constantly - the sick part is that we have a regular size court in the back yard - but no...he prefers this one - where he can make miniature NBA moves)

...and lastly...there was some swimming. Okay wading.

I told you I like to embellish.
